Which curriculum should I choose for my child?

You will be told that this is a choice about teaching style. It is not.

Once your child is not enrolled at a school, the school is no longer doing the things a school quietly does. It is not registering your child for exams. It is not holding the accreditation. It is not issuing the certificate at the end.

So the real question is narrower and much easier to answer. Which organisation will let your child sit an exam, and will the UAE recognise the paper afterwards?

Everything below is checked against the exam boards and against the UAE government's own pages, with the date we opened each one.

What are IGCSE, A Level, AP, IB and CBSE, in plain words?

You probably know one or two of these already and have never heard of the rest. That is normal. Here is each one from zero.

IGCSE stands for International General Certificate of Secondary Education. It is a British exam, usually taken at age 15 or 16, one subject at a time. Two boards run it: Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel. The certificate comes from the exam board, not from a school.

A Level means Advanced Level. It is the British exam after IGCSE, usually at age 17 or 18. Students take three or four subjects in depth. AS Level is the half-way stage.

AP stands for Advanced Placement. It is run by the College Board in the United States. AP is not a school-leaving qualification. It is a set of university-level subject exams that an American high school student takes alongside the diploma, to show extra strength.

The American high school diploma is the American school-leaving qualification. There is no national exam at the end. The school itself issues the diploma, based on credits and transcripts. This matters enormously for you: the value of the diploma sits entirely in who accredited the school that issued it.

IB stands for International Baccalaureate. The IB Diploma is one whole qualification taken at ages 16 to 19, with six subjects plus a core, and a lot of the marking done inside the school.

CBSE stands for the Central Board of Secondary Education. It is India's national school board, and it runs the Class 10 and Class 12 board exams that most Indian families know.

A quick translation, because parents arrive knowing different words for the same stage of life:

Which of these can my child sit if they are not enrolled in any school?

This is the dividing line that actually matters, and it splits the five routes more cleanly than any teaching philosophy does.

The word to learn is private candidate. Pearson defines it as "a candidate who is entered for exams at a centre but is not enrolled there", and names home-schooled learners as an example. We read that on 9 August 2026.

Two things follow from that table.

First, the British route is the reason most home-educating families in the UAE end up with IGCSEs. It is the one widely recognised international route where a child who is enrolled nowhere can sit exactly the same exam as everyone else. That is a structural fact about how the boards work, not a matter of taste.

Second, the IB is not a home-education route in its normal form. This is not the IB disapproving of you. It is that registration and a lot of the marking run through an authorised school. If you want the IB, you are looking for a school that will accept your child.

One live warning about 2026

Exams in the UAE were disrupted this year. Pearson's own page, read on 9 August 2026, says:

"In Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar exams in schools for the May/June 2026 series have been cancelled and will not go ahead as planned. This applies to both Ofqual-regulated and Pearson self-regulated qualifications."

The autumn series does appear to be going ahead. On 9 August 2026 the British Council UAE page was publishing a Cambridge price list for October and November 2026, an Edexcel price list for November 2026, and an International A Level October 2026 timetable. We did not find a separate statement confirming the autumn series in writing. Before you plan a year around a single exam sitting, phone the centre and ask.

What will the exams actually cost?

Cost is the second most discussed subject in the UAE home-education community, and almost nobody publishes real numbers. Here are real numbers.

These are the British Council UAE prices for the October and November 2026 Cambridge exams, in AED, VAT included. VAT is value added tax, charged at 5 per cent in the UAE.

The range inside one subject is the exam option, which is the particular combination of papers your child sits. The centre will tell you which option applies.

Registration for that series opened on 26 June 2026 and closed on 7 August 2026. Late registration ran from 8 August to 14 September 2026, at AED 445 extra per subject. Miss both and your child waits for the next series.

Pearson Edexcel prices work differently, and this catches people out. The International A Level is priced per unit, not per subject, and a full International A Level is normally made of several units. From the same British Council page, for November 2026:

Six biology units at AED 550 is AED 3,300 for that one subject. Registration for Edexcel ran from 30 July to 21 August 2026, with late registration to 17 September 2026. The price list also carries a warning worth reading twice: "not all subjects listed in the Price List are offered by the British Council."

Two more official fees you will meet later:

None of this includes teaching, books, tutors or a learning centre. Those are separate and usually larger.

What if we are an Indian family and I know CBSE?

Read this section carefully, because the answer is not what most people assume.

CBSE does have a private candidate route. It is narrow. CBSE's Examination Bye-Laws, in the chapter headed Private Candidates, list who is eligible. We read it on 9 August 2026. For the All India Secondary School Examination (Class 10) the list is:

"(i) A candidate who had failed at the All India Secondary School Examination of the Board will be eligible to reappear at the subsequent examination as a private candidate... (ii) Teachers serving in institutions affiliated to the Board."

The All India Senior School Certificate Examination (Class 12) list is the same two categories. The Delhi versions of both exams add two more: women who are bonafide residents of Delhi, and students with a disability, and both of those require you to live in Delhi.

A child who has been learning at home in Dubai and has never enrolled in a CBSE school is in none of those categories.

Two further rules close the door harder:

"Private candidates shall not be allowed to offer for their examination a subject (even if the subject is recognised for the examination) which is not being taught in an affiliated institution."

"Private candidates shall not be allowed to offer such subjects for the examination which involve practical work except in the case of candidates who had failed earlier and who had put in a regular course of study at an institution affiliated to the Board in the previous academic year."

So even a child who did qualify could not take the sciences with practicals.

What Indian families in the UAE are usually pointed to instead is NIOS, the National Institute of Open Schooling, which is India's government open schooling board. Several institutes in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi advertise themselves as NIOS study centres.

Before you go that way, read the next section, and read this line from the UAE Ministry of Education alongside it: "Any General Education certificate issued by a school following distance-learning or the open school mode of study will not be equalized." NIOS is an open schooling board. We are not telling you the Ministry refuses NIOS certificates, because we have not found a Ministry page that names NIOS either way. We are telling you that the wording points straight at it, and that you should get a clear answer in writing before your child spends two years on it.

We tried to open the NIOS website on 9 August 2026 and the connection was refused, so we are not restating its rules here. Check them at the source, and ask any UAE study centre to show you a certificate that was successfully equalised in the UAE.

Does the UAE have its own route?

Yes, and it is the least discussed option in the community. This is a government route, not a workaround.

The UAE government portal has a page called "Register in home-schooling stream grades 7 to 12 (for UAE nationals and expats)". We opened it on 9 August 2026. The page says it was last updated on 30 December 2024. In its own words:

"Under the system of home-schooling, the student is not required to attend regular classes. After the student registers, the educational zone in the respective emirate will provide him/her with the books and the required learning materials."

"The successful completion of a home-school education in the UAE is equivalent to graduation from any regular public school in the UAE."

The Ministry of Education runs the registration. Its service page, opened the same day, describes the stream like this:

"Home-Schooling Track (UAE Citizens and Residents): Students independently study the Ministry of Education curriculum from Grade 7 to Grade 12 in this Stream. There is no requirement to attend classes physically, and students must take online exams according to the regulations set by the Ministry of Education. This path is open to all nationalities from Grade 7 to Grade 12."

Here is the published detail, and the limits, in one place.

Three honest points about it.

It starts at Grade 7, from age 14. If your child is six, this is not for you, and we found no published equivalent route for younger children in any emirate.

It is a real curriculum commitment. Your child studies the Ministry's curriculum in the Ministry's language and sits the Ministry's exams. It is not a light registration you bolt onto a British or American course.

And it is framed for students over the normal admission age for public school. That framing is on the government's own page. Whether a 14 year old who is simply learning at home fits it is a question for the Ministry, not for us.

Will the UAE accept the certificate at the end?

For anything that happens inside the UAE afterwards, and university admission in particular, the document that matters is not the exam certificate. It is the Ministry of Education's equivalency decision on it. The u.ae portal states that the Ministry of Education "is the entity authorised to equalise high school certificates in the UAE".

We opened the Ministry's Grade 12 equivalency service page on 9 August 2026. The fee is AED 50 and the stated service time is 5 working days. Here is what it asks for, by curriculum.

Now the three conditions on the same page that matter more to you than the whole table above. They are quoted in full, because the exact wording is the point:

"Any General Education certificate issued by a school following distance-learning or the open school mode of study will not be equalized."

"Any form of academic study that is not in alignment with the educational system in United Arab Emirates will also not be equalized."

"Exceptional cases may be sent to the General Education equivalency committee for further review."

Read those three lines before you pay anyone a deposit. The page states the rule and does not define "distance-learning" or "open school mode of study". We have not found a published definition anywhere. So we cannot tell you where the line sits between an online school with a normal accreditation and one the Ministry would treat as open schooling. Treat this as unresolved, and ask any provider, in writing, whether a UAE student has actually been granted equivalency with their certificate.

Two limits on the page itself. It covers a Grade 12 certificate issued inside the UAE. A certificate issued abroad goes through a different Ministry service with its own conditions, which we have not read in full. And before you apply, your transcripts must be attested by the education authority in your emirate. The Ministry names a different one for each: ADEK (the Department of Education and Knowledge) in Abu Dhabi, KHDA (the Knowledge and Human Development Authority) in Dubai, SPEA (the Sharjah Private Education Authority) in Sharjah, the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah, and the Ministry of Education itself for the remaining emirates. If you live outside Dubai, the KHDA answer somebody gave you in a parents' group is the wrong answer.

If my child needs to go back to school, which curriculum is easiest?

Honest answer: the curriculum is barely the issue. The paperwork is.

From our regulatory research, checked 4 August 2026:

• Grade 1 accepts children aged 6 to 8 by 31 August.
• No test is required to switch from one school to another within the UAE.
• ADEK states that "Schools are not authorized to use assessments as a basis for determining student admissions."

So the barrier is not an entrance exam. It starts at Grade 2, or Year 3 in British counting, and above, where a school asks for a transfer certificate from the school your child is leaving. A transfer certificate is the document one school gives another to prove your child was enrolled and which year they completed. A child who has been learning at home has no school to issue one.

That is the real re-entry obstacle, and it is documentary.

The lesson for curriculum choice is simple. Anything that produces an externally awarded, dated, checkable certificate gives you a document. A brilliant year with no external record gives you a conversation. Both are real. Only one of them travels.

If you have not moved yet

Some of this is far easier to do before you land, and much of it is free at home and expensive here.

Get every school document attested before you leave. Attestation is the process of getting an official stamp that proves a document is genuine, usually from your ministry of foreign affairs and then the UAE embassy in your country. Report cards, transcripts and any leaving certificate. Doing it later from Dubai means couriers, agents and weeks of waiting.

Ask your current school for a transfer certificate now, even if you are not sure your child will re-enter a school. It costs you nothing today and it is close to impossible to obtain two years later.

If your child is mid-way through a British course, keep the same board. Cambridge and Pearson are not interchangeable inside a subject. Check which board your child's syllabus belongs to before you pack.

If your child is in an Indian school, think hard before you break the CBSE chain. As the section above shows, re-entering CBSE from outside is very restricted. Leaving a CBSE school at Class 9 and hoping to sit the Class 10 board exam privately is not a plan that works.

Do not sign up to an online school before you have asked it the equivalency question in writing. If your child will apply to a UAE university, the Ministry of Education condition on distance learning and open schooling is the single most expensive thing to discover late.

One thing you cannot sort out early. Education is compulsory in the UAE under Federal Decree-Law No. 39 of 2022, and the penalties for not enrolling a child run from AED 2,000 to AED 50,000. The compulsory rule is written differently for expat residents than for UAE citizens, and two pages on the government portal do not clearly agree on the age it ends. This guide is about curriculum, not about whether a particular arrangement satisfies that law. We will not publish a settled legal answer until the official sources agree.

So how do I choose?

Not by prestige. By four questions, in this order.

1. How old is your child? Under about 11, the routes teach broadly the same things and nothing is locked. From about 13, the choice starts to fix which exams your child can enter.
2. Where are they going next? If it is a UAE university, the Ministry of Education equivalency table above is your specification. If it is a university abroad, that country's admissions rules govern instead, and you should read them before you choose.
3. Does your child need to sit exams without being enrolled anywhere? If yes, that points to Cambridge or Pearson, and it rules the IB out unless you can get a place at an authorised school.
4. What happens if you change your mind? If there is any chance of returning to a UAE school above Year 3, decide now how you will evidence the years in between.

What we could not check

Stated plainly, so you can see the edges of this guide.

• Whether the October and November 2026 exam series in the UAE is confirmed. The British Council was publishing price lists and a timetable for it on 9 August 2026, which is strong evidence, but we found no separate written confirmation after the May and June cancellation. Phone the centre.
• How the Ministry of Education applies its distance-learning and open-schooling exclusion in practice, and how it defines either phrase. The page states the rule and defines neither.
• Whether NIOS certificates are equalised in the UAE. We found no Ministry page naming NIOS, and the NIOS website refused our connection on 9 August 2026.
• Whether any school in the UAE currently accepts outside students for AP exams. The College Board's list of authorised AP test centres does not include the UAE, and the process is to phone individual schools, which we cannot do on your behalf.
• The conditions attached to the separate equivalency route for certificates issued outside the UAE. We read the summary only.
• Whether any curriculum choice satisfies compulsory-education obligations for a child who is not enrolled at a school. That question is not answered here.
