What does homeschooling actually cost in the UAE?

Short answer

Homeschooling in the UAE costs anything from almost nothing to tens of thousands of dirhams a year, depending on what you buy. Online schools that publish a dirham price charge AED 19,828 to AED 46,800 a year. Learning centre sessions cost about AED 70 to AED 400 each. Exam entries cost AED 530 to AED 2,190 per subject.

What are you actually paying for?

There is no single bill for home education. You build the cost yourself, from five parts. Some families buy all five. Some buy one.

Cost lineWhat it isTypical published price
Online schoolA real school your child attends online. Teachers, lessons, reports, a qualification at the end.AED 19,828 to AED 46,800 a year where a dirham price is published
Classes and learning centresSessions your child goes to in person, for maths, phonics, sport, art or companyAED 70 to AED 400 a session, advertised
Curriculum and materialsBooks, printed worksheets, online resource subscriptionsFree to a few hundred dirhams a year

Two warnings before the numbers.

First, most providers here do not publish prices. Of the providers we traced through community groups, the great majority publish nothing on their own websites, but they hand out price lists on flyers inside WhatsApp groups. Where a price below came from a flyer, we say so and we give the date we saw it. A flyer price is a real published price. It is not a website price, and it can be out of date.

Second, we do not convert foreign currencies. Where a school publishes in pounds or dollars, we show pounds or dollars.

How much does an online school cost?

This is the biggest single number for most families. An online school is a school. Your child is enrolled, taught and graded, and at the end there is a qualification.

Only two schools in our set publish a price in dirhams.

Some words in that table need explaining, because a parent arriving from India, the Philippines or the United States will not know all of them.

  • IGCSE is the International General Certificate of Secondary Education, a British exam usually taken at about age 16. GCSE is its UK version.
  • A Level means Advanced Level, a British exam usually taken at about age 18.
  • IB Diploma is the International Baccalaureate Diploma, a two-year qualification taken at about age 18 and accepted by universities worldwide.
  • KHDA is the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, the body that regulates education in Dubai.

iCademy Middle East states on its own site that it is licensed by KHDA and that it issues its students a KHDA transfer certificate. We have not checked that against the KHDA register. The other schools in the table claim no UAE licence anywhere on their own pages, checked 5 August 2026.

One number in that table is unresolved and we will not smooth it over. Minerva's Virtual Academy publishes AED 46,800 on its Gulf page and GBP 9,365 on its UK fees page. The two pages do not label the same academic year, so they may not be the same fee. Ask the school which one applies to you.

The fees that are not the fee

Every school in the table charges something on top. These are easy to miss and they land in your first month.

SchoolOne-off or extra charge
iCademy Middle EastAED 500 application fee (UAE-based), AED 1,000 (international). Tuition excludes materials and resources.
King's InterHighGBP 100 registration fee. GBP 1,000 deposit for students outside the UK. Exam centre fees not included.
Wolsey Hall OxfordGBP 95 registration fee per student. Exam fees paid separately to the exam centre. International postage of books charged at cost.
CambriLearnUSD 95 non-refundable registration fee. Exam fees not included.
Crimson Global AcademyExam fees not included.
Minerva's Virtual AcademyGBP 930 deposit and GBP 95 annual subscription on the UK fees page. Public exam entries charged separately.

Notice the pattern. No online school includes your child's exam entry fees. That is a separate bill, covered further down.

How much do learning centres and classes cost?

This is where most of your money goes if you are not paying for an online school, and it is the thing families in the UAE talk about most.

The honest position: almost nobody publishes these prices on a website. The prices below are real, and most of them were advertised on flyers shared in Dubai home education groups. We record the date we saw each flyer.

Two things to take from this table.

Sessions are cheap. Habits are expensive. One session a week at AED 150 is roughly AED 600 a month. Two a week is roughly AED 1,200 a month. Three children at two sessions a week is a school fee.

Ask for the price in writing. A learning centre is not a school and is not covered by the Dubai school fee rules. On 22 May 2026, KHDA announced that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year. We found nothing saying that freeze applies to learning centres, so their prices can change whenever they choose.

What do curriculum and materials cost?

Less than you fear, if you are willing to use free material.

  • The UAE government home-schooling stream supplies books. The u.ae page says that once your child registers, "the educational zone in the respective emirate will provide him/her with the books and the required learning materials." The stream is open to "nationals and residents of the UAE", so expat families are included. It runs for grades 7 to 12 only, and Grade 7 admission starts at age 14.
  • Oak National Academy is free. It publishes complete English national curriculum lessons and resources, from early years to GCSE, at no cost, checked 9 August 2026.
  • Your online school may not include books. iCademy states plainly that tuition excludes materials and resources. Wolsey Hall Oxford posts printed books and charges international postage at cost.

We could not verify a UAE price for the paid worksheet subscriptions that families in community groups recommend. Those sites show prices in the currency of the country they think you are in, and none of them showed us a dirham price. We are not going to quote a number we did not see.

What will exams cost when your child is older?

If your child is going to sit international exams without a school entering them, you become a private candidate. You register directly with an exam centre. In the UAE that is usually the British Council, which has offices in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.

These are the published prices for the October and November 2026 series, read from the British Council UAE price lists on 9 August 2026.

QualificationPrice per entry, as published in AEDNote
Cambridge IGCSEAED 530 to AED 1,915 per subjectMost core subjects fall between AED 800 and AED 1,380. Double award sciences are the most expensive.
Cambridge O LevelAED 800 to AED 1,380 per subject
Cambridge AS and A LevelAED 835 to AED 2,190 per subject
Cambridge late entryAED 445 extra per subjectCharged on every subject entered in the late window, see the deadline table below
Pearson Edexcel International A LevelAED 550 to AED 1,070 per unitA full International A Level is normally six units, so a science subject at AED 550 a unit is about AED 3,300
Pearson Edexcel late entryAED 1,160 low late fee, or AED 1,770 high late fee, per unitA unit that costs AED 550 on time can cost AED 1,770 late

The deadlines matter more than the prices, because missing one is what makes an exam expensive.

The 2026 cancellations, stated plainly

You need to know this before you plan around exams.

Exams in the UAE were cancelled in 2026. Cambridge cancelled its June 2026 IGCSE, O Level, AS and A Level and IPQ exams in the UAE and moved candidates onto a portfolio of evidence route. Pearson's own page, updated 25 June 2026, says exams for the May and June 2026 series "have been cancelled and will not go ahead as planned" in "Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar". OxfordAQA and the International Baccalaureate cancelled their UAE exams too, as reported by Khaleej Times on 3 April 2026.

For private candidates specifically, Pearson said only that it is "working closely with local authorities and delivery partners, such as the British Council, to explore the options available". We found no published guidance telling a private candidate whether fees for the cancelled series are refunded.

What we can confirm is narrower and more useful: on 9 August 2026 the British Council UAE was publishing price lists, timetables and registration deadlines for the October and November 2026 series. Before you budget for exams, call the British Council UAE exams team and ask what applies to your child.

How much is a tutor?

Reported rates are much higher than the flyer prices above, because you are buying one adult's undivided time.

The National reported on 22 October 2025 that parents in the UAE "could pay between Dh350 and Dh400 an hour for a private tutor". Separately, a flyer from a home education tutoring business advertised AED 100 per hour, seen 9 August 2026. The gap is real and it usually reflects group teaching against one to one teaching, and an experienced qualified teacher against a less experienced one.

Do the sum before you commit. Two hours a week at AED 350 is AED 700 a week, which is about AED 2,800 a month, which is more than most online school fees.

How does this compare with a Dubai private school?

Here is the tradeoff in one place. The school figures are for schools rated Outstanding by KHDA, reported by Khaleej Times on 15 July 2026.

RoutePublished annual cost
Dubai private school, French curriculum, Outstanding ratedAED 29,488 to AED 62,363
Dubai private school, Indian curriculum, Outstanding ratedAED 38,246 to AED 73,876
Dubai private school, British curriculum, Outstanding ratedAED 43,084 to AED 111,799
Dubai private school, IB, Outstanding ratedAED 44,616 to AED 89,889
Dubai private school, American curriculum, Outstanding ratedAED 66,185 to AED 93,300
Online school, iCademy Middle East, Kindergarten to Grade 8AED 19,828
Online school, iCademy Middle East, Grades 9 to 12AED 27,767
Online school, Minerva's Virtual Academy, Years 7 to 13AED 46,800
UAE government home-schooling stream, grades 7 to 12Registration fee not published. Books and materials supplied by your educational zone.

The Indian curriculum is CBSE and similar boards, the Central Board of Secondary Education, which is the national exam board most families from India already know. The American curriculum leads to a US high school diploma and AP courses, which stands for Advanced Placement, American college-level courses taken in high school.

Two honest notes on this table. The school figures cover only schools rated Outstanding, so cheaper schools exist below these ranges. And a school fee buys transport options, sports facilities, a canteen, a nurse and a full timetable, all of which you would be arranging yourself.

What might a year actually add up to?

These are our own sums, using only the published prices above. No provider quoted these totals, and they are examples, not quotes.

ExampleWhat is in itYear one total
Lowest cost, older childUAE government home-schooling stream (books supplied), free Oak National Academy resourcesRegistration fee only, which is not published
Middle, primary childiCademy Kindergarten to Grade 8 at AED 19,828, AED 500 application fee, one class a week at AED 100 for 36 weeksAED 23,928
Higher, secondary childMinerva's Virtual Academy at AED 46,800, two sessions a week at AED 150 for 36 weeksAED 57,600, before exam entries

Add exam entries in the years your child sits them. Five Cambridge IGCSE subjects at AED 1,060 each is AED 5,300.

If you have not moved yet

Some of this is cheaper, or easier, before you land. Four things are worth doing from your home country.

Check whether the school charges you more as an international student. iCademy Middle East does. It publishes AED 19,828 a year for a UAE-based student in Kindergarten to Grade 8 and AED 21,451 for an international student, and the application fee doubles from AED 500 to AED 1,000. If your move is close, ask the school when you become UAE-based for fee purposes.

Expect a deposit if you enrol from abroad. King's InterHigh publishes a GBP 1,000 deposit for students outside the UK, on top of its GBP 100 registration fee.

Buy and pack printed books at home. Wolsey Hall Oxford charges international postage at cost. Books you already own travel free in your shipping allowance.

Bring your child's school records with you. A leaving certificate or transfer certificate from your child's current school is far easier to obtain while you are still there and still a parent at that school. iCademy Middle East states that it requires a transfer or leaving certificate from the previous school before it can register a child with KHDA. We have no verified figures for what document attestation costs, so we are not quoting one, but the paperwork is a cost line and getting it before you leave removes the hardest part.

One thing that does not change with your location: the exchange rate. If you enrol in a school that charges in pounds or dollars, your annual bill in dirhams moves every year even when the school's own price does not.

What we could not find out

This section exists so you can see the edges of what we know.

  • The registration fee for the UAE government home-schooling stream is not published. The u.ae page lists "proof of payment of applicable registration fees" as an admission requirement and gives no figure, checked 9 August 2026.
  • No published route was found for a child under Grade 7. The government home-schooling stream accepts grades 7 to 12, with Grade 7 admission from age 14. We found no equivalent published, priced route for younger children in any emirate.
  • Whether cancelled 2026 exam fees are refunded is not published. Pearson has published no guidance for private candidates on this.
  • Most learning centres publish no price at all. Every centre price in this guide came from a flyer or a price list handed out in a community group, except New Leaf and Piccoli. Always confirm the current price with the provider before you book.
  • Nothing here is regulated as a school fee. The Dubai fee freeze announced on 22 May 2026 covers private schools. We found no rule capping what a learning centre or a tutor may charge.

Common questions

Is homeschooling cheaper than a private school here?
It can be, but it is not automatic. A Dubai private school rated Outstanding charged AED 43,084 to AED 111,799 a year for the British curriculum in 2026-27, as reported by Khaleej Times on 15 July 2026. An online school with a published dirham price costs AED 19,828 to AED 46,800 a year. But the school fee is one payment that covers almost everything, while home education is many small payments: online school, classes, materials, a tutor, exam entries. Add them up before you decide.
Is there a free option at all?
Partly. The UAE government runs a home-schooling stream for grades 7 to 12, and the u.ae page says the educational zone in your emirate provides the books and the learning materials. That page mentions a registration fee but does not say how much it is, checked 9 August 2026. For teaching materials, Oak National Academy is free and covers the English national curriculum from early years to GCSE. Nothing else in this guide is free.
Why are all the prices in pounds and dollars?
Because most online schools are foreign companies and charge in their home currency. Only two schools in our set publish a dirham price. We do not convert the others, because the exchange rate moves and the school does not actually bill you in dirhams, so any converted number would be a guess. Check the rate on the day you pay, and ask your bank what it charges for a foreign payment.
How much should I budget per month?
Take the online school fee and divide it by twelve, then add what you plan to spend on classes. Advertised session prices in Dubai home education groups run from AED 70 to AED 400 per session, seen 9 August 2026. One session a week at AED 150 is about AED 600 a month. Two a week is about AED 1,200. A monthly play centre membership was advertised at AED 895.
Are there costs nobody mentions?
Yes, four. One, registration and deposit fees on top of tuition, from AED 500 to GBP 1,000. Two, exam entry fees, which online schools exclude from tuition. Three, late exam entry, which adds AED 445 per subject with Cambridge and can more than triple a Pearson Edexcel unit fee. Four, posting books to the UAE, which Wolsey Hall Oxford charges at cost.
Do I have to pay everything in one go?
No, most publish instalment options, and they cost more. Wolsey Hall Oxford publishes an eight-course IGCSE bundle at GBP 5,937.50 paid in full or GBP 6,250.00 by instalments. King's InterHigh publishes a rolling half-term contract as well as an annual one. Minerva's Virtual Academy publishes a monthly plan of GBP 1,100 over ten payments against GBP 9,365 paid annually. Always compare the two totals.

Which online school should I choose?

Six online schools UAE families actually use, compared in 2026 on published fees, live lesson times and UAE licence standing. Only iCademy Middle East is licensed by KHDA and issues a KHDA transfer certificate, the document a Dubai school asks for.
